Education is more than just a fundamental right; it's a powerful tool that can transform lives, break the cycle of poverty, and bring about significant social change. Yet, the staggering reality is that 258 million children and adolescents worldwide still do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school (UNICEF, 2020).
Ending Illiteracy, Creating Equal Opportunities
At Skye Global, our commitment is to change this reality - ensuring that every child, no matter where they are born, has access to quality education. We stand against the alarming statistic that over 72 million children of primary school age are not enrolled in school. Our mission is to end illiteracy and create a world where educational access is universal.
The Challenge: A Multitude of Barriers
In many parts of the world, access to education is hampered by numerous barriers, including geographic remoteness, poverty, lack of infrastructure, social stigma, and absence of a conducive learning environment. Poverty plays a significant role, as children in poverty are less likely to access well-funded schools, are more likely to drop out, and are less likely to graduate from high school or college (Ferguson et al., 2007).
These challenges disproportionately affect minority students, neurodivergent learners, children in poverty, and students grappling with physical and mental disabilities. Such disparity breeds inequality, holding back not just individuals, but entire communities from realizing their potential.
Promoting Equity: Our Mission
Skye Global is striving to create a world where personal circumstances do not impede a child’s ability to learn and excel. We focus our efforts on constructing safe, nurturing learning environments and promoting equity in the classroom.
Building Infrastructure: A Foundation for Success
Every child deserves a classroom—a safe, secure, and stimulating space where they can unlock their full academic potential. Improving school infrastructure can increase student enrollment by 13.3% and reduce student dropout rates by 19.6% (World Bank, 2020). In collaboration with public education systems and local communities, we build educational facilities that provide the physical space needed for enhanced learning experiences.
But a successful learning environment is more than just space. It also involves the right support system and resources.
Providing Resources: Tools for Success
We implement strategic solutions to ensure every child has the tools to succeed. We provide each student with a laptop or smartphone and broadband connectivity, facilitating online learning and self-study. Additionally, we provide textbooks and materials tailored to diverse learning styles and offer educational books for free. We respect and recognize cultural holidays, promoting an environment of inclusivity and mutual respect.
Addressing the Essentials: The Pillars of Learning
Skye Global is also committed to addressing the essentials that support a child's ability to learn. Challenges like inadequate nutrition, poor hygiene, or difficult home circumstances can significantly impact a child's ability to focus on their studies. To counter this, we provide academic guidance, therapeutic counseling, and family interactions. We guarantee internet connectivity for learners without access and ensure the provision of school breakfasts and lunches, allowing children to consume balanced meals that support their physical health and academic performance.
We also address health-related impediments to education, with purified water access, private sanitation facilities, and hygiene education. These are crucial measures, as water- and sanitation-related diseases cause the loss of 443 million school days annually.
The Power of Education: Beyond the Classroom
The impact of education stretches beyond the confines of the classroom. It has the potential to significantly alter long-term career prospects and socioeconomic mobility, notably affecting low-income students, rural learners, first-generation college students, non-native language speakers, and people with disabilities.
By promoting access to higher education, we aim to break the barriers that can perpetuate cycles of poverty and marginalization, empowering individuals to shape their futures positively.
Join Us: Make a Difference
We are steadfast in our belief that a world where everyone has access to quality education is possible. As we move towards our goal of impacting 8 billion people for the better by 2035, we invite you to join us. Let's end illiteracy, promote equity, and provide the essentials necessary for learning. Together, we can build a world where education is a right, not a privilege.
